There are several trains leaving Bangkok daily for Chiang Mai. Find what are the things to do in Chiang Mai and book your Bangkok-Chiang Mai train ticket. This route is a bestseller and one of the best and truly typical experience in Thailand. We strongly recommend nighttime travelling in a sleeper car. The trip should normally last 14 hours, but we know of cases where the train had a 6 hours delay! This is also a reason why Bangkok – Chiang Mai is a fun trip. In certain seating cars you can find a disco-like ambiance.

Regarding the bookings, it’s very difficult and rather impossible to have a sleeper the same day since there are only a few and they can be booked 1 or 2 months in advance. It’s easier to get a seat, but sitting for 14 up to 20 hours is not a good perspective.

Our advice: first class, a little bit more expensive than the second, allows for a 2 person cabin with an individual washbasin or even communicating cabins, ideal for families. Another exclusive information: the train no. 1 has 6 adjacent cabins (2 by 2), which means 3 groups of 2. Train number 13 also provides single-berth adjacent cabins (2 by 2).
